About iOS
iOS is a mobile operating system developed by Apple. It used to be called iPhone OS, but was renamed to iOS in June 2009. iOS currently works on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
Like modern desktop operating systems, iOS uses a graphical user interface, or GUI. However, being a mobile operating system, iOS is designed for touch screens rather than keyboards and mice. For example, an app, or “app” can be opened with a single click, instead of double clicking. Different screens can be viewed by dragging your finger across the screen, instead of clicking on an open window.
While iOS is designed to be simple and easy to use, it does not include many features found in traditional operating systems. For example, you can’t manage files and folders like you can in Mac OS X or Windows. You also have limited access to iOS system settings.
Instead of changing app preferences through each program, most settings should be configured in the Settings app. Also, although you can run multiple programs at the same time, only one program is open at a time. Although Apple’s iOS offers a more basic user interface than Mac OS X, each new version adds more features. For example, iOS 2 provided access to the App Store, which allowed users to download and install other apps on their iPhone. iOS 3 added copy-paste functionality and iPad support. iOS 4 was the first version to support multitasking and added GameCenter functionality. iOS 5 introduced the voice assistant Siri (only available on the iPhone 4S) and offered a new cloud connectivity feature.
With nearly 2 million apps in the App Store and hundreds of billions of downloads, the iOS developer market has seen nothing but an upward trend.
Since Apple released its new programming language, Swift, in October 2014, it has become one of the most popular modern programming languages in the world. Swift is an easier language to learn than JavaScript, Java, and Python, not to mention its user-friendly nature, a large number of children between the ages of 8 and 14 want to start with iOS.
iOS development is not only for programmers or coders with years of experience, in fact, data shows that there are a significant number of creatives, students, and writers learning iOS development. Apple’s development environment is an ever-changing environment and thousands of developers from around the world gather at Apple’s annual developer conference known as WWDC.
Whether you want to work for a tech startup helping them design and develop their own mobile apps or want to create your own, the options are endless. In fact, most of the software developed from the beginning is for Apple users. Clubhouse on Snapchat is designed for beginners only for iPhones or iPads. Swift is the leading language for building successful mobile apps for today and it’s here to stay for more than a decade.
Reasons why you should become an iOS developer
Apple’s programming language is easy to learn
Swift, Apple’s modern and powerful programming language, was designed with this in mind. Like any other Apple device, it is known for its simple and elegant design.
Apple engineers designed Swift to be powerful enough for professional developers, while still being able to meet the needs of beginner programmers or even kids learning to code. Check out Swift Playgrounds for example. It is a Mac and iPad game developed by Apple to help children understand programming.
iOS developers are the future
iOS developers are the future
Many companies have developed apps to be the primary source of their products. Whether it’s ordering food like Grubhub or having someone deliver your groceries like Instacart without going out and waiting in line, many companies are pouring resources into their food department. And as more people buy Apple products, Apple produces budget iPhones, and more developers enter the iOS ecosystem, the future is bright for iOS developers.
It is still considered an unsatisfied market as iOS gains worldwide adoption. These are the company names you might think of when studying iOS development.
